ORC Bedroom Retreat Week 1

The One Room Challenge has officially begun! If you’re not already familiar with this challenge, twice a year, you can participate as a guest, alongside 20 featured designers, to join a 6-week challenge to recreate one room. The event was created and is hosted by Linda Weinstein of Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. With hundreds of guest participants, you can be sure to find an endless amount of inspiration and original ideas by following along here. We are super excited to be a guest participant this year and can’t wait to see what all of the other designers create.

THE PLAN

Of all the rooms in our home, the one that is always the most neglected is our master bedroom. Unlike common areas (living, dining, kitchen, etc) this is a room that can easily be hidden behind a closed door when guests come over, so it’s rarely at the top of our list. I have been dreaming of a bedroom that would feel like a retreat at the end of a long day, so when I decided to sign up for the One Room Challenge it was the best excuse to give our bedroom the desperate makeover it needs.

Our makeover will be a mix of new items, current items and DIY’s. First we are keeping our West Elm dressers to avoid a larger purchase. They are fairly new, in great shape and really nice so we wanted to incorporate them if possible. I will be recovering our current headboard with a different fabric and I plan to thrift some vintage lamp bases if possible. We will also be installing an accent wall with vertical shiplap and I think it’s going to be a big impact project.

THE BEFORE

It’s slightly painful to share these with the world, but we are keeping it real here. Don’t judge me, okay? Here is the current state of our depressing bedroom that is begging us for some TLC. Our cover has not been put back onto the duvet, our bassinet is still in our room (even though our 6 month old hasn’t been using it for 3 months,) and we still have boxes to unpack from moving in June. Like I said, keeping it real. The good news is — this room won’t be recognizable in 6 weeks and I hope you stick around to see the transformation!

If you don’t already, be sure to follow us on Instagram to see the day-to-day failures and victories.
