ORC Bedroom Retreat Week 4
It’s week four of the One Room Challenge and despite a vacation, we were still able to squeeze in one small project. If you’re not already familiar with this challenge, twice a year, you can participate as a guest, alongside 20 featured designers, to join a 6-week challenge to recreate one room. The event was created and is hosted by Linda Weinstein of Calling it Home and Better Homes and Gardens. With hundreds of guest participants, you can be sure to find an endless amount of inspiration and original ideas by following along here. We are enjoying the connections we have made so far with fellow guest participants!
This week we tackled an easy DIY that literally anyone can do. I had seen this baking soda process floating around on Instagram and have been wanting to give it a try, so I hunted down some ugly lamps with a decent shape to test it out. Here are the items you’ll want to grab for this project.
Vase, Lamp, Etc
Paint of your choice
Baking Soda
Paint Brush
Mud
Spray Paint
It seems like an odd set of items, but the goal of this paint job is to give these pieces a more aged and clay-like look them. I wanted to almost make them look like a piece of pottery.
Step One: Mix the paint and baking soda and apply. It was a little trial and error (and I mostly eye balled it,) but I landed on roughly 1 part baking soda measurement for 4 parts paint. Mix everything up and get it painted!
Start Layering. My layers went something like this: Paint > mud > spray paint > mud > paint. This is such a great DIY, because there are no rules. Try something and if you hate it, do something else.
This mud totally felt like I was rubbing runny dog poop all over my lamps and found myself saying “it’s just dirt, it’s just dirt” to myself over and over.
See what I mean? It’s not poop. Promise. I honestly love this look before I went back with white paint and am still debating on going back over them with more mud and spray paint. Like I said, no rules!
I do love the way the white paint looks against those walls, but we will see if I am committed to it or if I will go back with more mud. Either way, I am loving how this cheap DIY turned out! I haven’t decided on lamp shades quite yet. I know the shape and size I want, but don’t want to nail down a color until I find the fabric for the headboard. This room is a bit of a process, but it’s coming along. Slowly, but surely. Thanks for sticking around!
